The new financial year brings welcome news for anyone looking to build their retirement savings. From 1 July 2026, the amount you can contribute to super has increased, with both before-tax and after-tax contribution caps rising.

Adrian Mastroianni, Financial Adviser at Highview, explains what these changes mean and what to consider when reviewing your super contribution strategy.

The concessional (before-tax) cap rises to $32,500

Up from $30,000, this cap covers your employer’s Super Guarantee, any salary sacrifice, and personal contributions you claim as a tax deduction. Because these contributions are generally taxed at just 15% inside super, rather than your marginal rate of up to 47%, every extra dollar you can direct here works that much harder for you. If you haven’t used your full cap in recent years, you may also be able to carry forward unused amounts, depending on your total super balance.

The non-concessional (after-tax) cap rises to $130,000

Up from $120,000, this covers personal contributions you don’t claim a deduction for. For eligible individuals under 75, the bring-forward rule allows up to three years’ worth, now as much as $390,000, to be contributed in a single year, depending on your total super balance. The general transfer balance cap has also lifted to $2.1 million.

These are meaningful increases, but the right approach depends entirely on your circumstances. Your age, income, existing balance, and the timing of any contributions all matter. Eligibility thresholds and limits determine how much you can contribute and when, and exceeding them can trigger additional tax.
