Trading names are being retired. To continue trading under a specific name, you need to register it as a business name.

 

 

The Australian Business Register (ABR) has been working with Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) in preparation for the retirement of trading names this November 2018.

To continue trading under a specific name, you need to register it as a business name. After a business name is successfully registered it will appear on ASIC’s business names register and the ABN Lookup.

Trading names that were collected prior to 28 May 2012 will continue to be displayed in ABN Lookup and the ABR until October 2018, but can no longer be updated. This is to allow time for the business community to adjust to the new business name system and to take steps to register a business name which may have previously been unregistered.

This name information will remain in the ATO for internal historic record purposes only. They are not available in any public view, nor able to be viewed or updated in any ATO self-service channel.

From November 2018, all trading names will be removed from ABN Lookup. Only registered business names will continue to be listed, so check you have registered your trading name as a business name with ASIC by then.
